From Global Nomad to Remote Work Evangelist

After 20 years living and working overseas for international companies, I found myself back ‘home’ in Edinburgh, Scotland just as the pandemic hit. Suddenly, everything was uncertain and the world was facing unprecedented challenges. But amidst all the chaos, I managed to secure a role that – outside of the compulsory lockdowns – allowed me to work remotely, from the comfort of home.

After working in offices for most of my career, working remotely came with a new set of challenges for me. From setting up a comfortable workspace, to managing distractions, it was a learning curve. But perhaps the biggest challenge was building new client relationships and maintaining strong partnerships without ever meeting in person.

Despite the limitations of virtual communication, I quickly found ways to adapt and connect with clients through various online platforms and media. From virtual meetings to video calls, I made sure to prioritize building strong bonds and trust with my clients.

Through consistent communication, timely responses, and a genuine interest in their needs, I was able to not only retain existing clients, but also secure new business opportunities. The key was to approach each interaction with a personal touch and show my dedication to the client’s success.

Working remotely may have its challenges, but with dedication and a willingness to adapt, it is possible to build strong client relationships and thrive in a virtual work environment.

As we continue to navigate uncertain times, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue growing and expanding my business despite the obstacles we face, and now I know how to be successful working remotely, there are even more career opportunities for me than in the past when I was in roles that required me to be in the office the majority of the time.
